The comparisons that people often make to this show and sword art online are for the most part pretty fair, although saying its just as bad or exactly the same as it is going slightly overboard, but really only slightly, the show is still pretty bad for a variety of reasons which I'll discuss but at least somebody who likes this show can confidently say that momonga is less shitty of a character than kirito. Why? Because Kirito is an emo little bitch in spite of being the ultimate Mary Sue(or since he's a guy Gary Stu) and having an army of anime bitches that want to hop on his dick, the dudes got no reason to be depressed all the time.

Kirito also had no reason why he should be so overpowered, he played solo a good portion of the time, used leveling tactics that he admitted were ineffective, and the beta test only gave him 6 months more time with the game than non-beta testers and no advantage over other beta testers, in sword art online its also mentioned that some of the mechanics had changed since beta so there was no reason why it would have given him the kind of omniscience he seems to possess with regards to the game.

Momonga and Kirito have in common that they are overpowered, but with momonga it actually makes sense for him to be so powerful: he played the game for years, probably from its initial release of its peak in popularity up until the point the servers shut down, in any case long enough to reach maximum level, him and his guild had also collected items from all over the game's world and he kept all the items his comrades left behind.

The MMO world of Overlord also makes more sense than that of Sword Art Online's... at least from what I've gathered from watching these 13 episodes they make sense, in Sword Art Online, its as if the writer had never played an MMO himself.

Unfortunately having a protagonist who is less insuferable than kirito and having a fictional world that actually makes sense because it sticks to its own rules dosen't make for a good show on its own, the NPCs are still pretty flat because they don't really have notworthy personality traits other than admiration for momonga and the other MMO neckbeards they've mistaken for gods, the show's pacing is bogged down by its need to explain everything in excessive detail and bombard you with other kinds of useless information.

I couldn't help but be a little annoyed with the fact that the show gave momonga's first party so much screen time and then killed them off, and this wasn't even due to any attatchment I had to these characters that i was annoyed, it was just annoying that the show wasted my time with these characters that didn't really serve a purpose.

I consider the show to be of poor quality but at least I didn't feel like it completely wasted my time, only mostly wasted it which is why I give it a 4 rather than something lower
