First, I would like to say thank you to everyone who has been following my reviews, you’re the awesomest! This semester is a challenged and I’m also balancing motherhood, running Facebook groups, AND I’ll be working a second job starting next week, so I’m doing the best I can with making good on my promises. Enough about my self-inflicted stress, let’s get into the review!
Story: From the first episode, I was hooked! How do you kill the titular character in the first episode??? HOW SWAY?! The episodes after that were kind of lagging but it still held my interest. The dark tournament is most likely the favorite arc amongst Yu Yu Hakusho fans, but it was my least favorite because it was SO long. After that saga ended, the characters still remained in touch with each other and faced many obstacles. The last saga was great and the ending made me smile; I am very pleased with the ending. From what I’ve heard there are differences from the anime and the manga, and there may have been an arch left out? Don’t quote me on this.
Character: I appreciated how well developed each character was (some more than others). The relationships seemed genuine and had a good amount of time to grow, especially in the Dark Tournament Arc. I’m happy everyone continued to be friends!
Art: The artwork was very reminiscent of late 80s and early 90s anime. The artists made great use of shading in scenes, like with the fight between Yusuke and the doctor in the hallway...THAT was amazing. I loved the artwork for the all of the openings and endings, but my favorites are the first opening and ending.
Sound: The sound in this show was incredible; the sound effects and music are very cool. It was a pleasure listening to all of it, especially since the 90s revival is hot right now. I loved the entire OST! The music played during flashbacks, dialogue being exchanged, during fights, or anything else was beautiful. I appreciated the opening theme remaining the same because it was a perfect fit for the show. As previously stated, I love all of the theme songs, but “Homework ga Owaranai” (Homework Never Ends) is by far the best, in my opinion…
The English soundtrack for the dub was terrible, they should literally apologize for it.
Entertainment: Overall I enjoyed this show, I give it a solid 9 because it has certainly earned it. Right now it is not on my list to rewatch, because I need to update my queue, it has grown tremendously over the past year, but I recommend it to anyone, as it is a quintessential 90s anime. Also, I recommend watching Super Eyepatch Wolf’s hilarious YouTube video “Why You Should Watch Yu Yu Hakusho.”
Thanks fo reading my review! My next review is “Kamisama Kiss” so look out for that. Also, my facebook group “Grown and Otaku” has grown and we are always accepting new members 21 years and older. Have a great day, SMOOCHES!
