My greatest criticism is that this story would be much better suited to a 10-12 episode anime. That way the particularities and ambitions of the characters could be developed and become more relevant. That being said they are good characters, the main character is quiet and serious and driven. He doesn't shout the loudest but he certainly tries the hardest at what he wants to achieve. The entire story is predictable, and the end wasn't bad as it shows that the protagonist is still only a child, but that means the plot depends almost entirely on character and character development. Unfortunately the female character is less well thought out, she's a kind-hearted damsel in distress with a dark past and that's pretty much where it ends, although she has some quirks.
The artwork is beautiful, and you can almost feel the rain on your skin and smell the trees in Shinjuku Park. However the people themselves weren't as well animated, which is a shame.
Overall this movie made me wish deeply for an anime adaptation but it was still enjoyable and let you into the mind of a peculiar and intriguing boy living in a bustling Tokyo.
