Unexpectedly impressive. Mind you, this is like the first film of a trilogy that will never have a 2nd or 3rd part.

First off, whatever you do, listen to the first OP. It is ever so epic.

If we hold each individual aspect to the highest possible standard, it will fall short, but not by much in most aspects.
I have a few issues with it: The choreography of the fights is very stereotypical, bouncing boobs (that on one character are absurdly big, and such cheap things demean the show) and the gags revolving around Tamaki's personality. The vast amount of unresolved and unexplored aspects of it can't be ignored either.

The characters are the classic archetypes, but, the way they were fleshed out shows us a realistic portrayal of such personalities in a recognizable reality, and that is what finally compelled me to rate this as high as I do.

They never transcend their human limitations because of their starring roles in the story; the naive boy-crazy girl gets manipulated instead of chastised into changing; the introverts stumble under the insecurities they have in themselves or the desires they're too hesitant to pursue; the blindly noble and innocent lead suffers because of how that mindset fairs in a world riddled with injustice.
And all of them can't escape their past of the reality of who they are; their reputation won't change; the dynamics between them don't either.

After only one episode it will seem average to a fault, but the way it is constructed from there on shows what many shows fail to do: Build some logical reason that has our protagonists be the chosen ones, as well as give us a threat of imminent danger in aliens that are out to do nothing more than hunt.
