I don't get why a fair amount of people here in North America tend to respond to this anime a bit harsh way. Maybe is it cause the excessive gore? The nudity? The touchy subject matter about the human race/genocide? I dunno but its not as bad as some people make it out to be. It is severely underappreciated and to be fair i find this in my top 5 anime's easily cause it is that good. Now why do i like this, first of the music/art style is gorgeous for the opening and torment of Lucy past, it really hits the nail on the head on how sad the theme is meant to be. The song "Lilium" is honestly beautiful to listen too, they made the right choice to sing the verses in Latin to make it sound more pretty and sad to listen to. Some people criticized that the animation looks very outdated today, well of course it came out nearly 12 years ago so i would think it would be a tad out dated and the ending song seems out of place, it might be so but i think it shows something people over looked, it shows a bit of a happier lucy too, so i think the opening is meant to show torment of Lucy but after the show is over it shows her finally in peace and bliss.Second off, the story of extermination is really well done i think, cause it is a touchy subject to make into an art form, i think Elfen Lied does it well cause it shows similarities such as Nazi's to Jews or Soviets to the Ukrainians, they show how the Human race treats the Diclonius with great indifference. WIth that being said, when Lucy snapped which some people said its a little extreme, i think its not really the case, sure was it a little extreme to create the source material for "John Wick"? Perhaps but it showed something if you beat any creature enough times and say "you're bad or you will never fit in!" they eventually either believe it, they keep fighting on till things get better or just snap in a violent rage. So in all honesty its really meant to be touchy story to leave some people feeling uneasy and it does it job well. Sure the school drama parts are a little corny and Lucy alterego might get on some peoples nerves and of course dubbing issues in all languages might hurt some of the experience. But when people say to avoid this anime i say no, give it a shot at least 2 times. Once to see the thing as a whole, then watch it again at some point and stay realitivly focus on the touch subject matter then you can learn to appreciate how underrated this anime is. Honestly any person who gave this anime a not so strong review without a 2nd watch should really give it a another shot and see it for what it is.
