So, I’m writing this after literally just finishing the final episode about 10 minutes ago and I currently have many emotions running through me after ending the season, what better time to write a review right?!

I picked this up after having been on a moody, macabre, drama anime binge. I was in need of something to...”pick me up” shall we say? I’m just so glad I stumbled across Gugure! Kokkuri-San. I’ll be honest, it isn’t my normal genre to watch e.g. comedy/slice of life etc but it has been a massive eye-opener for me to try more comedic animes, I’ve come away feeling satisfied, content and keep finding myself giggling whilst remembering it. Plus, I won’t lie that the Tomoe (Kamisama Hajimemashita) look alike drew me in too!
I started watching this without reading much about it and without knowing fully that it was a comedy, so initially I was like “WHAT IS GOING ON?!” in the first episode but DAMN the characters grow on you SO quickly and are SO loveable that it’s hard not to laugh to yourself and just go with the flow. There isn’t MUCH in the way of character development; I’d recommend looking elsewhere if you’re after something with a detailed, structured plot and CD. This is really just the daily workings and circumstances of a bunch of quirky, weirdos thrown together under one roof to form a VERY disjointed ‘family’. What I loved was that, although the main bishies have all the makings to be standard characters types, they each have enough unique, quirky traits to make them all very individual and refreshing to watch. I just love watching their interactions with one another and Kohina. This makes this anime very interesting even though there is no strict plot. I personally, never got bored and found myself always wondering what would happen next. Kohina herself is just hilarious. I found myself blurting out coffee whenever she said anything because it’s so blunt and painfully realistic. Maybe a bad thing but I found some of the things she said WAY too relatable aha.

The ONLY reason I have rated this as a 9 instead of a 10 is because I found myself just craving the TINIEST bit of character development, I finished the season worrying about fictional characters and if they’d all be okay ha, what?! I ended up feeling so bad for Inugami by the end that I wanted to just dive into my screen and cuddle him and make him coffee...

Ah I’m a bit of a sucker for inspiring background music. There was some really beautiful music hidden within Kokkuri-San. The ED too is just lovely. I think we can all agree that you’ll either want to shake your butt round the house to the OP or plug your ears and scream until it’s over. I guess it’s like marmite; you’ll love it or hate it.

To put it bluntly, I just really enjoyed this anime. I really can truthfully say that I laughed, I cried and I really gave a damn about it. I enjoyed watching every episode and it was a pick me up that I needed. I would recommend it to folks who just want something light, that they don’t have to think about and that’ll make them laugh and feel good.

I really hope there will be a second season!
