Well, i don´t watch too many animes, so probably i can´t really compare to other shows very well, but i can compare it to stories in common. For me a good story is told, when it wether makes me laugh or cry or leaves me wether happy or thoughtful in the end. This anime made me cry and happy, too. Sure it´s no Drama, but the little stories told within are making the characters great.
About the drawing and the sports, which seems to be a point for people to wether watch it or not (I was wondering about it, too, at the beginning because of many comments) - i can only tell you :
Sure they were drawn "attractive" but seriously, i don´t think that this is enough to care for a character. By the way, there are so many animes in which there is way more attention being payed on drawing "girl bodies", so i don´t see, why "drawing the characters attractive" would matter or make that story worse.
For me it was a story about friendship, about characters who take care of each other along the way and having the time of their life, yet it is just going to start. (You should definitely watch "eternal summer", too!)
About the "sports" in the Anime : The Team is always training to become better and they even show that they try to "eat the right things" (which is very important doing sports). I liked the cheering up and also the fact that later it shows Rins Problems abroad and that it´s not easy at all to follow your dream.
For me that was enough sports included. Of course in reality it´s much different from the training to the looks etc, but i didn´t except to watch the olympics but an anime after all and I was happy it would leave me with my imagination. So for me, it was (very unexpected) an amazing anime!
I really did enjoy it ! :) I would recommend it to everyone, especially to people who like character driven stories more than plot driven stories.
