I rarely give anime a 9 out of 10. Typically it's either a masterpiece and deserves a 10 (like FMAB), really good and merits an 8 (like, say, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works), or is good but not great and gets a 7 (like The Irregular at Magic High School). I don't think I've given a 6 or lower so far.

9s are rare because they're right between superb and really good. Hunter x Hunter (2011) was a 9 if I recall correctly. Normally you may think, based on my other reviews, that Owari no Seraph would get an 8 at best. However, I think it hits 9 for some particular reasons.

First, the art. The characters have a sharp way of standing out to you, my compliments to Wit Studio. The way the vampires' eyes and noses are drawn, or the color and hair style of the protagonists. The sound, Hiroyuki Sawano, is majestic yet again, and reminds one of Henry Jackman or a similar-styled composer of film. The openings and endings are really good, emphasizing the tense relationship between the main character and the guy with the yellow hair, his best friend from childhood. I won't explain further, gomennasai. You gotta watch this and the second season. The character. Now, why exactly this gets a 9 -- it has to do with the clandestine plan behind the scenes and why this is called Owari no Seraph -- I can't tell you, you gotta watch it for yourself. But the story, the vampires and humans and that virus that mysteriously only killed off humans above the age of 12, is awesome, simply awesome. I really wanted to know what would happen next when watching this. Too bad I'm writing this review now and not immediately after seeing the show.
