[Spoiler Warning]

there are amazing shows that you want to watch over and over again, there are mediocre shows good for viewing once, and there are godawful shows that make you want to douse your eyes in bleach. guess where mirai nikki belongs? mirai nikki is an absolute atrocity in every sense of the word--but to tell you the truth, i gave it a 3 because its plot had massive potential, and it sufficiently entertained me that i managed to finish it. with all that said, i’ll try my best to be as objective as possible from this point onwards (keyword: try). now, where shall I begin?

Story 2/10

the concept is relatively unique, despite having a hunger-games-esque feel to it. but their similarities are pretty surface-level: a fight-to-the-death battle royale where only one person can emerge victorious. from there, their storylines diverge into completely different entities.
mirai nikki’s plot is a mess; it’s a haphazard conglomeration of elements that don’t work well together. the rape scenes were completely unnecessary, it has so many plot holes it might as well be swiss cheese, and the constant shifts in tone made it hard for me to take it seriously. ror example, in one episode, it had a happy scene that quickly escalated into a gory bloodbath. the whole scenario came from nowhere--and speaking of nowhere, nonsensical storylines and character arcs are constantly thrown into the mix, and they never end in satisfactory resolutions. worst of all, the core storyline of the show doesn’t make any sense when you look at it from another a clinical, logical perspective: prospective candidates to be the god of space and time can apparently be anyone, ranging from your eighty-year-old grandmother to a babbling five-year-old child. surely the current god could've chosen more appropriate participants? the entire process is a giant question mark that leaves room for more questions but fails to deliver answers.

also, mirai nikki fails the romance category. it felt so contrived and forced that it was one of the most irritating aspects of the show.

Art 5/10
i can’t really hold the show’s animation against it; the quality is consistent, for the most part. sure, there are parts where the characters look deformed, and the animation is stilted, but that’s to be expected.

Sound 5/10
i’ll say, the first opening is good, as it matches the anime’s theme, but i completely skipped the second one.

Characters 1/10
tbh, all of the characters are two-dimensional.
yukiteru amano is easily the worst character in the anime (the second being his father). this guy has a complete lack of redeeming qualities. sis personality remains static throughout the entire anime; he never learns from his mistakes, and every time something bad happens to him, he ends up breaking down in tears. (SPOILER) One thing I can’t quite comprehend is the fact that yuki forgave his father for leaving him to die to save himself, and subsequently killing his mother. like, who does that? he’s selfish, and he constantly relies on Yuno instead of taking it upon himself to fix his own problems. it’s impossible not to hate him, as he spends the entire anime wallowing in self-pity. even the characters call him out for his idiotic actions, but instead of developing into a better person, he actually regresses in growth. for example, in episode 18 or 19, just when you thought he grew a backbone, it turned out that it was all scripted. the entire plan was devised by none other than yuno herself. speaking of yuno, she’s a little flat, in terms of characterization, but she is intriguing. had she been given more complexity and depth, i might have given this department a 3.

Enjoyment 8/10

although the show became progressively worse as the anime went on, it was pretty entertaining. mirai nikki is so pathetically terrible, that it’s almost good. however, it’s clearly not something I’d rewatch again.
