Preliminary (4/12 eps)
When I saw the first episode of this show, I was pretty excited. It had pretty much everything going for it: gritty war story, character strewn about in a ruined battlefield, debris and fire everywhere. Something told me it was going to be a cool show, not a very good one, but cool nonetheless.

Then it just fell flat on its face.

Here's a short run-down of the overall premise: magic is common in this universe, and our MC is part of an academy that specializes in fighting the misuse of magic by witches and the like.

Characters

Takeru - Harem protagonist, usual "nice" guy that wields a katana for whatever reason and always tries to help other people. Has a deep as hell voice that is a stark contrast to the usual harem MCs that sound like women when you don't pay attention.

Others - Every other character is just the usual lineup of characters from any other harem show: excitable loli big tits, tsundere, kuudere, perverted big sister-type, the one flat chested girl that has a complex about her breasts...

Everyone in the show has some semblance of a backstory, which is at least somewhat good, but the show just tries so hard to pass each of their backstories off as "deep" and "mature".... Then Takeru comes along and says his trademark "Let me carry half your burden" line to them and all is resolved somehow.

Story

The first half focuses on Takeru and the members of his platoon - the "35th Test Platoon" or "Small Fry Platoon". Their platoon is so-called due to their abysmal performance in the academy but nothing serious ever really comes out of that, making the whole "we're the worse team so we should do something before we get kicked out" thing seem insignificant.

The second half involves the usual "the world is gonna end because of X and we need to stop X using the power of friendship" story arc.

I get that they're really trying to go about with this gritty magic scifi plot, I really do. But it really took it out of me when most of the characters have magical engrish chants and costumes straight out of goddamn Power Rangers - it just does not match what they are selling.

Art

The art is decent - the characters are mostly modest in design and the backgrounds look good with some looking a bit too stiff. Colours are suitably bright and cheerful when needed, with the darker moments being noticeably grim and dark to match. The action scenes are made with really clunky CG, so the disparity is largely there.

Sound

OP and ED are one-note and not very memorable. Voice acting is good as well, you can tell the VAs had some fun with their work. Others sounds sound a little generic but nothing too bad.

Enjoyment

I genuinely had some moments of fun with this show. It may fail in the drama section, but with this being a harem and romance show at the core, I say Silver Link did a decent job.

Overall

When it's the holidays or you just have some time on your hands and nothing to watch, then this is the show for you. It doesn't have any hard thought put into its story, making it ideal for a quick marathon and a popcorn flick through and through.

But hey, who am I to tell you what shows to watch? Take this review seriously or with a pinch of salt, I don't really care. Cheers.
