While very idealized, this show is a good portrayal of post WWII Japan and of general Japanese-American sentiment. You get a look at the internal problems that were plaguing the nation during the war and afterwards. The show gets you to hate characters you're supposed to hate, and to love characters you're supposed to love. It also looks good. So basically, it's a good and well-made anime. My only problems with it were a soundtrack that didn't always reflect the tone of the events that they were playing behind, and characters that, for me, seemed to fall flat when thinking about more than whether or not they're badass and good shonen heroes and whatever (@Mario and Sakuragi). Generally, this show had a lot of potential with its setting and story, but the music and characters didn't allow it to reach the heights that it could have with its premise.

It's still a pretty good watch though. I highly recommend it ^_^
