Of course one would need to have watched the Neon Genesis Evangelion anime series to have proper context going into this film (although my heart does race at the thought of watching this as a standalone film), and with that said, End Of Evangelion is the single most thrilling film I have probably ever seen to date. It truly had me hanging on the edge with a lightning quick heartbeat for the entire duration. This was the ending to Neon Genesis that my heart truly needed. The art was a step up (as expected) from that of the anime series, the beautiful and extremely complex character progressions continued on par, and the story line only intensified. Although I came into this film expecting a shady attempt at fixing the disappointing ending from Neon Genesis in the most predictable way, Gainax quickly shot down any expectations I had of the film in the first 15 minutes. It's very hard for me to truly sum up the beauty of this film relative to the series without including spoilers, so i'll close this review with the unequivocal truth of this film: Masterpiece.
