Shakugan no Shana I:

Where do I begin? The story seems like a good place. Yuji Sekki goes from being your average high schooler to end being like a Torch. Residue Humans, who lose their power of existence and fades out to life being as though they never exist. Yuji, despite being told this, continues to act in a way that puzzles the Flame Haze: Blazing Hair Blazing Eyes with Alastor. They eventually learns that Yuji has a special thing inside him called the "Midnight Lost Child." Every Midnight, his existence refills. This means Yuji won't fade away. (But you could guess that as Yuji's the main character.)

The Pacing? It seemed a little slow. Maybe I'm just used to anime with plots that are sleeker like Soul Eater, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Code Geass. But this predates all of them by 2-5 years. It's not always a bad thing though as it allows characters to fully interact and develop slowly.

The Characters: Yuji, Shana, and all the Flame Hazes and the human supporting characters are interesting enough to watch, and written consistently. The villains though are one dimensional. You never get a sense of their modus operandi, and they seem to have many varying ones, and the lone exception, the Professor, has the usual "FOR SCIENCE!"

I found my enjoyment to be tempered on and off again, some days I would watch three or four consecutive episodes. Other days, I didn't even want to turn it on.

Overall: I'll give it an 8 which is slightly higher than some ratings, but it seems to warrant that.

If you're looking to acquire this series, the dubbed (Geneon) version is available on iTunes. All the seasons are very pricey, but on the plus side, you can buy via episode, reduce the price, and you can either download it or watch it on any Apple device with a good enough wifi connection. (Without ads interrupting the episode)

($44.99 for the whole thing plus tax for HD Season 1)

I wouldn't recommend buying without watching the first arc though. And unlike other animes like Unbreakable Machine Doll and The Devil is a Part-Timer, this isn't an instant buy.
