Mixed Feelings
Preliminary (7/13 eps)
Story 7/10: So Sushi police is about these three government guys (one’s a robot) who listen to the cries of untraditional sushi. Then they hunt down and stop the chefs that are making them. By the way, when I say untraditional sushi, I mean things like chilli sushi, zombie sushi, just anything that isn’t 100% legit Japanese. And you know what, it was pretty damn funny to watch. I mean sure, there’s some mad pacing issues and the 3 minute length of each episode really messes with the continuity of the story because this anime tries to fit so much into such a short period of time. But come on, sushi cops? No matter how that plays out, it’s a pretty funny idea and that definitely shows a few times throughout anime, I mean watching two grown guys fighting for the sacred rights of sushi kind of just lends itself to some fairly funny moments.

Character 6/10: Now the characters are pretty simple. You have the big boss man who can hear the crying sushi, his sidekick who’s kind of like a rookie of the team and the robot who pretty much just flips around messing things up, providing some cheap comedy and at times, some legitimately good comedy here and there. But there really isn’t much more to them than that. I mean the episodes are only 3 minutes long so lacking character development is kind of expected. Don’t get me wrong, that doesn’t stop them from trying, but at the end of the day you just can’t develop a character in 5 seconds at the end of an episode.

Artwork 5/10: Characters aside, what could be really annoying for some people is the animation. So it’s 3d, 100% 3 dimensional all the time. Oh and it’s not the nice kind of 3d, it’s kind of dirty and pretty wonky. But it’s a pretty light-hearted comedy so really the art style is fine, it’s passable. I’ve even seen some people praising it but no, the animation is pretty sketchy and the 3d element does not help it. So no it’s not great, but it’s still pretty good.

Sound 8/10: The sound is fine. 3 whole minutes of perfectly good voice acting and SFX every time :)

Enjoyment 6/10: So all and all, Sushi Police isn’t great. The characters don’t have a lot going for them and the animation is kind of sketchy. If you don’t like 3d animation, then yeah you’ll probably hate it. But, if you give it a shot, you may just find that it can be pretty funny and you definitely could get a few good laughs. So, I’d have to say it’s a solid 6/10.
