At first I thought this anime was going to be a bust. When I first read the synapsis and then later watched the almost magical girl like traformation/references I almost dropped it there. Luckily I forced myself through the first few episodes and got to see what made this show worth watching.

st- This show has a decent balance of tragedy and comedic relief. Even though there is some parts were you can only help but feel pity for the characters somehow they manage to keep you from falling over the edge into pure tears with well places comedy.

nd-The characters themselves weren't perfect but well written even the background ones. Although I find a few minor flaws specifically the utter lack of self preservation that some of these guys display. Don't get me wrong, self sacrifice is respectable. Howevver I feel as if the characters could have expressed a fear of their own death without diverting to much from the plot. Especially himari who seemed oblvious to reality until the very end.

-This show has a unique bit of mindf*ck*ry. It prides itself on having more twists then a pretzal. While when out in the open these twists aren't hard to understand. However with a bit of forshadowing, even when you think you know what's going on, you are left with the feeling of how the heck did I miss that.
-The music was well composed, and a decent match to the series. It did it's job in setting the mood while also making you question everything. Which seems to be what it was intended for.
-One thing I would like to mention is despite all the weirdness this show brings to the table in the form of supernatural penguins(Never thought I would say those two words in the same sentence) this show takes a more mature stance. Don't expect budding romance, that is not the focus of the show. While relationships between characters are apparent these remain primarily platonicish relationships with a bit of a romantic undertone. The characters will rarily act on it in a way that doesn't add to the plot. If you are looking for a heart warming prince meets princess romance you will not find that here. There is not a single stereotype in here. The mc's are not dense, there is no tsundere, while characters can express behaviors akin to that the feeling's for the most part are completely out in the open.
