I first got into Tokyo Ghoul by watching the first two seasons of the anime. At first, I really enjoyed the first season and the second was eh, alright to me. Everyone was telling me to read the manga because of how great it was and I obliged.
Now, usually when I do this I end up being a fan of both the anime and manga, but it didn't work out this way at all. When I finished the manga (not counting :re of course), I was in tears and just amazed at how amazing it was. The characters, story, art, everything was stunning. It's easily my favorite manga of all time. After I finished I decided to re-watch the anime, which was a mistake.
Going from the manga to the anime is like going from Gucci store to a thrift shop. Everything just felt wrong. Hardly any of the characters got any screentime, there was little to no character development, and, I know this was supposed to be different from the manga, but that doesn't excuse how poorly everything was done.
So many important characters were forgotten, which was its biggest downfall to me. Tokyo Ghoul is full of wonderful characters with great backstories and they were all just pushes aside. As well as this, they left so many plot holes that you'd only know if you actually read the manga.
Please, if you did enjoy the anime I urge you to read the manga because I promise it's so much better, and if you didn't I'd still recommend it because I can understand why many people didn't enjoy the anime.
