Heads up, if you think this anime is about happy people living happy lives and sunshine and fairy tales, and everything will be "daijoubu" you are talking about a different series my friend. Personally, this series is one of the darkest, emotional roller coasters I've seen in a long time, and if you plan on watching it, then i wish you best of luck. Clannad is a family themed anime (clannad means family in Irish) depicting the harsh realities of adult life. Clannad afterstory is quite literal in its meaning, as it takes place right after the 1st season. Clannad following the relationship between Tomoya and Nagisa and they develop their relationship together and deal with one anothers individual problems. The 1st few episodes (first 8 episodes) are kinda rocky. They don't fit in with the story well and it pretty much useless. If it intended to make me cry, I didn't. Despite those few episodes, the real Niagara falls start after episode 9. Just watch to find out.
things i prefer in clannad afterstory over clannad
- The characters
There is HUGE character development throughout the series, especially with our main female protagonist, Nagisa Furukawa ( who is my personal waifu ^-^) During the 1st season, I liked her alot, but her character didn't seem strong enough to notice (not meant physically) even though she was sweet, kind and nurturing, she really started to blossom during the second season and she became my all time favorite female anime character. She was supportive, determined, a complete darling btw, and a full fledged well developed character who I was mentally attacked to. And that's what I loved about this series. It really got me attacked to Nagisa and the other characters since it provided us with character development, gave us a backstory, let us know them personally and were just down right lovable people. It was mind blowing. Go Nagisa! may you live on.
And same goes for for everyone else but their kinda pushed to the sidelines during clannad afterstory as it is solely focused on Nagisa's and Tomoya's journey.
- The animation
The animation is top notch in the second season (go Kyoto animation!) As this is expected since it was aired 2010 and had time to develop its animation. But still superb. My favorite scenes were probably ones from the illusionary world and is deemed to have been one of the most beautify illustrated animations.
- sound
Words cannot describe the audio's played during this entire series, (tbh nothing really changes sound wise in the 1st or second season, but its still amazeballs) The sound track played during some of the emotional scenes is one of the best I've ever heard and really emphasized the current situation. The audio track is probably the second best feature about this series and people have to check it out ( go JUN MAEDA!, you are quite literally a genius)
- The story
just check the series out, I wont spill too much
- The romance
My favorite couple tbh, the depth to which this show goes to with their relationship is mind blowing and i really appreciate it. Tomoya x Nagisa 4lyfe

Okay now lets get to the ending without giving away any spoilers ( ik its impossible but i'l try)
Some say it was quite unsatisfactory as it stuck to its visual novel routes with the alternative ending and should've not strayed from its path but i found it to be quite admirable. Just go check the series out and state your opinions.
Any way to end this enormous review I just have to point out that this series is a life changing one and is one of the few master pieces i have seen in a long time. Be warned, if you star this show, by the end you finish it, you will get hooked, get withdrawal symptoms, not be able to get over those desires to start the show all over again for the 100th time and repeat.
Clannad afterstory will tear your heart and rip out your soul.
enjoy!
