I found this anime to be more a lot more charming than scary, which is actually a good thing. Since the genre isn't listed as horror, but Occult Detective I am going to assume that it wasn't intended to be that scary. (Some people found it to be really scary, as I did not).

I feel this is something probably overlooked time and time again, which is a shame really. No, it's not the greatest anime you will ever see but there is something about it that keeps you intrigued, and wanting to watch more. It is what you would call a hidden gem.

This anime is set up into 8 files, which means there are basically 8 mini arcs all set up in the scenario of solving a paranormal case. This is both its greatest strength and weakness, as you feel you grow with each character as they solve each case, thus moving onto the next case. However, the lack of knowing each character outside of "work" (their job) truly creates this distance of getting to know the characters on a more personal level.

None of the characters are really fleshed out all that well, and sometimes you forget the main character is actually the main character because she seems so out of place at times (seems harsh to say useless). My biggest gripe about the characters, is that the interesting back stories of the characters are hardly touched upon once mentioned and left to be a mystery. However, despite all of its flaws the characters still remain very likable and do maintain this family sort of vibe at times that just makes you smile. Maybe from a technical standpoint the characters aren't very great, but to me personally I think they are very rememberable and I thoroughly enjoyed how each character interacted with each other.

There really isn't much of a story since each file is a story in itself, which is why the ending seemed rather disappointing. Although the ending was fitting, it was a little rushed. Each arc however was pretty well paced, and some of the later arcs had more emotionally gripping scenes. The arcs in the beginning seemed to be more scientific and technical (well written mysteries/having greater plot twists) while the later arcs tended to be more action oriented. So, you will probably find an arc you like more depending on your stance.

The music is the absolute best thing in this anime. The OST throughout the whole shows fits so well it is really hard to explain unless you watched yourself. The end credits song is my personal favorite, it simply is beautiful.

Despite the many negatives this review might contain, I would suggest you go out on a limb and watch this anyways. Personally, this anime has an enjoyment level far beyond its technical flaws as It truly has a unique charm to it that cannot be replaced.

Extra: Despite the awesome music, the intro is probably my least favorite opening out of any anime I have ever seen. Also, after finishing the anime I came up with a theory called the Naru Dream Theory. Maybe you could understand what I mean if you finish the anime :)

Quotes:
"If someone was to still doubt your ability, then they must not have believed you from the start anyway, so just ignore them." - Naru

"“What the hell is pride worth if you have somebody else protect it for you anyway." - Mai
