Azumanga is in many ways a compact compilation of the fun, awkward, silly, eventful, and uneventful moments that one typically experiences in their high school years. While Azumanga might not have much to offer in the way of revolutionary material, what makes it the slice of life that stands the test of time is the well-written refining and presentation of a high school comedy that looks, sounds, and feels more organic than others of its genre. The characters aren't cliche, and although many of the characters are simple in nature, they still convey a sense of well roundness in their behavior, with one notable exception where I often cringed at the predictability and awkwardness.

I can't see the series in terms of plot per se, but rather moments, vignettes, or snapshots into the high school experience. The experiences we get to glimpse into are surprisingly funny, enjoyable, and most importantly, entertaining.
