Ah, Elfen Lied. An anime of much discussion, much of the discussion surrounding the shows dark themes and the many, many, MANY boobs shown. Hearing lots of praise for this show, I decided to give it a try, and was somewhat disappointed. That isn't to say I didn't like it, the show had many redeeming elements to it. Let's start off with its short comings, and then we can praise it to heaven and above.

No anime is perfect. Even your favorite anime has flaws. To begin, let's start off by analyzing the characters. My first issue with the characters is their piss-poor intelligence at some points. To begin with, who in their right mind picks up a random naked girl without a second thought? It was an unrealistic reaction, one that somewhat takes one out of the emersion of the show. Here's another example, when Mayu finds the soldier on the ground, on the verge of death, her reaction was laughable. She was calm, and acted so 'stiff' about the situation. Again, it was unrealistic. The other issue I had with the show was the rushed feel at sometimes. I'm sure you are saying to yourself right now, "but euphoria it wus de onlee 13 episode! de have to rush it!". See, there lies the issue. It was thirteen episodes, damn long enough to get through everything without being rushed heavily. There, we got through the worst part. I didn't even complain about Lucy constantly saying "Nyuu!". Now we can praise it.

Elfen Lied had a story that was very good, and poses a question for the viewer, the question being, "What makes a human classified as a human?". In the show, you see the mutated humans being treated like animals, constantly being experimented on in brutal ways, all because they were born the way they were. They were 'unlucky' you could say. At a point, they are even refered to by certain characters as unhuman.

The music was great. The opening matched the theme of the show well, while mixing in the proper fanservice. That's a tenouttaten, in my book. The OST gave the show a certain ominous feel, and definitely worked well.

The art was good. The animators made sure to pay attention to detail enough just so they didn't overdo it. It was drawn well, and had no issues as far as I could see. Hell, I could be wrong about that. If you spotted an issue, feel free to tell me on my profile.

Elfen Lied was an enjoyable ride, and one I definitely recommend you partake in. If you have an issue with my review or have any advice or criticism, please feel free to visit my profile and drop a commento. I'd appreciate it.
