No mystical creatures, no violence, no super powers...but instead an amazingly touching look inside the world of the Hikkikimori in modern Japan. As many people know, Japanese society can be very demanding, and not all young college students can handle the pressure. Hell, this is true in many societies including the US these days. Since this is such a real world problem, it was a fascinating story detailing the motives behind shutting yourself in and avoiding the world outside.

Satou is so shut in and intimidated by the real world that he believes an imaginary organization named the NHK has a conspiracy against him when the series starts. We get to witness him gradually work up the courage to venture outside again and attempt to get his life back into a normal track. He makes friends, we see old love interests that have moved on, and a potential new one. I became very involved in his story and empathetic towards the end.

I haven't found another Anime like this one. I designated it a masterpiece because it was so unique and touching and I felt so connected by the end of the story. I highly recommend this series to anyone. The pressures of society are ones we can all relate to in some degree.
