Mixed Feelings
The story of Root A picks up immediately after the first season's timeline. It follows Kaneki after being released from his torturer from the previous season.

The graphics and animation is amazing as usual. The "painted" art in the opening and closing theme are also very impressive. However, no matter how good the art style was, in terms of character development the show fell a little flat. Yes, Kaneki did change in this series compared to season one, he became physically stronger and more brooding but I felt that it wasn't the kind of "change" that I wanted from his character.

The rest of the supporting characters didn't have any significant improvement throughout the entire series. Which is kind of a bummer. I'm the type of viewer who looks forward to character development.

I'm not saying that I didn't like the characters or that they were unappealing. Quite the opposite really. All of them are likable. I think the author did a good job at making me feel like there are no antagonists in the series. Yes, I'm rooting for the Ghouls but gah! A back story from the CCG kind of makes me want to root for them too.

Moving on to the story, well honestly I got so confused most of the time I was watching this. More characters were introduced and more conflicts were chucked into the story but at the end of the day (or the series) those new characters and conflicts did not have a resolution.

If I were to describe Tokyo Ghoul Root A in one word it would be depressing. I mean, I could have sworn the author hated Kaneki because of all the things he had to endure. I was like, "Come on! Give Kaneki a break!"

So yeah, this is a sad sad anime. A sad anime that will make you realize that there are two sides to things. Just because you think you're right does not mean that the other party is wrong.

And just because people are different doesn't mean that you can't find something in common.

It teaches you the importance of protecting the ones who are dear to you.
