For some reason the first thing I think of when I remember the protagonist Kouta is the giving tree. This is mostly because both are really stupid, really blind, but really, really kind, despite what people say or do to them. I'm not going to go and say this is a masterpiece, because its not really, it is however worthwhile. This is because it is nowhere near as holey as some people like to believe, the characters are all interesting, the basis for the plot is kind of awesome, and finally the relationships between characters feels believable and relatable. Despite this the series is really very flawed, most of the plot is just the military throwing different sized rocks at Lucy, then there is the convenient amnesia/odd schizophrenia.

That doesn't mean to say I didn't like it, I did, a lot, it reminds me strongly of utopia ( live action show, I know I'm sorry) where people do horrific things for the greater good. But throughout characters are consistently humanised and given reasons, such as the chief.

The main thing wrong with this anime is, in an odd way, one of its greatest assets, it has an inability to explain things quickly, and hates shoving things in your face, in this way one of the most important sub plots is revealed to you, and you work out what happened. Despite this when the show tells you what happened it's all the more heart rending because you saw it coming. This kind of fucked up however when the story is coming to a close and all the fairly interesting story-lines aren't finished.

Finally the ending ties up a running theme throughout the anime of things being broken. This is where it shines the brightest, and where I changed its rating from a 6 to a 10.
