I got curious about this anime after seeing an AMV for it.

There are two world in this anime: the parallel world of the female fighter Black Rock Shooter and these other female fighters and then there is the real world of six female characters around whom the plot revolves. At first, you may be totally confused because the anime switches back and forth between these two worlds without explaining why. It is only in the later episodes that the connection between the two worlds is explained. If you watch the anime closely, you can figure it out beforehand I like did.

Personally, I found the reason for the connection between the two worlds very interesting, but I wish there could have been an explanation for how the parallel world came to be.

The female fighters of the parallel world are very strong physically and have awesome weapons and abilities to fight with. They are exciting to watch because one or two of them fight with Black Rock Shooter every episode.
As for the girls in the real world, they are complicated. With the exception of Kagari, these female characters are good people who have painful personal issues that are revealed as the show progresses and gets dark. Depending on the character, you can either empathize with them or pity them.

The two worlds and the characters in each of them come together to form a story about learning how to deal with life in all its painful and non painful moments. There is a metaphor for the anime's moral that compares life's ups and downs to bright colors and dull colors as well as a bird flying through different places. By the end of the anime, I found these metaphors very poignant.

A final notable aspect of this anime is the animation style. It reminded me a lot of Madoka Magica because it makes the parallel world look like a garish funhouse. However, it wasn't a bad thing because it fit the characters in the parallel world as well as the storyline.

Overall, I enjoyed the anime, despite its plot hole with the parallel world. If you like watching anime that deals with psychological or emotional problems in a creative way, then I would recommend this. If you are just expecting an action-packed anime, then steer clear of this.
