Story: I really can't accurately review the story, as I didn't finish the season, and the arcs are supposed to connect at the end. But what really matters to me is that it didn't keep me watching in the first place. Each arc had the same pace: everything is totally normal and then BAM girls doing f*cked up shit. It was too abrupt, too cliche. The arcs each start off the same way, and on the 3rd one I was thinking, "I have to watch this shit again?" The plot twists weren't surprising enough, the girls' actions weren't believable, and it just wasn't scary. I watched this at midnight and didn't feel a drop of fear.
Art: Often, strange art styles can be overlooked if the anime excels in other aspects. And that's not the case with Higurashi. The strange, childish art just added to the annoyance of it. It didn't make it creepier; it just made it laughable.
Character: If it couldn't get any worse, this anime is also kind of a harem anime. One guy, bunch of girls. Of course, romance isn't the focus, but it still perpetrates that stupid troupe of the guy and his bitches. And they're in middle school.
Each of the characters are perfect cliches. You have all the anime stereotypes: stupid guy, yandere, tsundere, moe, ect. So it's not like I care if any of them die. I can barely even stand watching them. Characters could have saved the story, but instead they put the final nail in the coffin.
This anime is not good. Maybe the end is smart, maybe everything is tied together, but what does it matter if it's unwatchable? There's nothing to gain from this anime; it's not scary, interesting, or innovative. That's just my opinion.
