Mawarau Penguindrum can easily be argued one of the better animes of its time. Though the story itself addresses a topic that is not entirely new (are we bound by fate's chains, or can we create our own path of destiny?) , it is told in a beautiful & different way using rich symbolism & metaphors. This anime is not for the dimwitted however or scattered brained. It will require ones attention to catch the meaning of the symbolism & metaphors used.

The animation is executed exquisitely with its rich & bright color, clean bold lines, and overall pleasing visual aesthetic which its director & co-writer Kunihiko Ikuhara has become known for. This mixed in with the symbolism used not only causes the viewer to deeply think of the message it's conveying, but also facilitates the enjoyment of watching. Even if one does not entirely pick up on the meaning of all the symbolism used its pleasing to watch in itself.

Vast character development right out the door brings the viewer in quite quickly with no time to spare in the 24 episodes; not much unlike Neon Genesis or Clannad. With its impeccable story telling the viewer immediately creates an emotional bond through the trials and tribulations that these characters must endure in hopes of creating a path for themselves that may not come to be. Its completely relatable in every sense to the actual human struggle.

With its masterfully depicted story telling, symbolism, animation and overall meaning I feel this is a must watch for any anime enthusiast. I haven't enjoyed an anime this much since Evangelion Neon Genesis and it immediately became one of my all time favorites. I highly suggest for anyone to watch this, but especially for those who enjoy finding deeper meaning in things & the connection found through human strife.
