Pupa (Anime) add (All reviews)
Mar 27, 2014
Pupa is a good story, a good manga from what I hear, and Studio Deen put a lot of time and effort into making something good. Then, the censors happened and a regularly timed show that followed the manga got turned into a 4 minute per episode mess of over censoring and incoherence.
The real shame is that this show could have been great. The art is really well done, the sound is great, hell they even went as far as to record actual eating noises for some of the sound effects. But I don't think you can blame the director, Studio DEEN, or the source material for the complete fail that was this anime. That all goes on the censors.
I've heard people discuss whether the over-use of censoring was a way of DEEN "sticking it to the man," or that the random time jumps and incoherence was also part of the studio fighting back against being forced to censor a show they did not want to censor.
When you consider Sakura Trick, it makes some sense. That show is also a Studio DEEN show, also aired winter 2014, and also has some pretty mature themes, but it was able to air un-cut, in full, while Pupa was relentlessly chopped up, to the point where there's some scenes that are almost entirely censors.
I would have given this a 1/10, but the art and sound were really well done. I'd love to get a hold of the un-cut full episodes of this, because I feel like it might be worth watching. Sadly, what was aired, is not worth your time, other than for a quick laugh at the comments in the forums.
