The opening was the first thing that caught my attention, I found Lilium (the opening song) a true masterpiece right from the beginning and the first episode really suprised me.
I found Elfen Lied by searching the web for Animes with lot's of blood and gore but I did not expect to find an Anime with such a good story behind it that also had just the right amount of gore in it (for me).
Elfen Lied was an emotional rollercoaster for me, at some times it made me happy and it made me smile but at other times it made me think about my life and this world, especially how people tend to treat one another.
The characters and story were what really got me hooked.
Kaede/Lucy/Nyu who is the main character really had me cry at times and she made me feel bad for her. Nana I feel brought a sadness with her, as well as the whole story with Kohta and his sister.
To me the ending was... I would not say a let down but let's just say that I really hope they will make a season two to clarify some things.(Though the chance that will happen is very, very small).
But, overall I think Elfen Lied is an Anime that really shows that you can have an Anime with blood and gore that also has an extremely well developed storyline.
