Preliminary (9/13 eps)
Ah, Elfen Lied... From our dear mangaka Lynn Okamoto (I think that's her name??) comes one of the bloodiest and most depressing anime ever created. Like many other people, I was initially turned off by the gore and nudity of the first episode, but I decided to give it a chance. I don't regret that decision in the least, because behind the bloody cover lies a sad yet wonderful story.

The plot revolves around a young Diclonius named Lucy. Diclonii are mutants similar to humans but possess sets of horns protruding from their skulls. They also have invisible hands called vectors, allowing them to kill easily from far away. When we first meet Lucy, she is escaping from the Diclonius Research Facility, violently killing those who get in her way. As she walks calmly out of the building, she is shot in the head and knocked off a cliff. When we see her again she's been discovered by two college students, Kouta and Yuka. She's been struck with amnesia and can now only say the word "Nyuu." They take her to their home, which was really stupid. Why would you take a naked girl with horns who'd been shot in the head to your house instead of turning her into the police? Whatever.

Now for the art. The animation is pretty good, the backgrounds look okay, and overall the art is a little above average. Except for the blood. Good grief, this show has some of the most realistic gore I've ever seen. There isn't much more for me to say.

The opening theme is a beautiful, sad, almost scary Latin theme. The song ends up playing a big part later on in the show. The ending theme is a bit more cheerful but just average. The background music is fine also. The dub. It's my opinion but I think this is one of the best dubs ever created. The VAs fit their roles so well.

The characters are well developed. You feel sympathy for them all, especially Lucy. Damn; she had one of the most depressing back stories ever. And her two sided personality makes her so much more interesting. However, I hated Yuka. Yuka is so freaking annoying. Not much more to say. The anime is very driven by its characters.

I haven't finished it yet, but this show is one of the best I've seen so far. The plot is sad and disturbing yet it's all worthwhile. If you aren't a big fan of the gore than you might overlook something- give this show a chance and you can discover the substance in it. I strongly recommend this anime to any anime fan who doesn't mind blood but likes deep storytelling.

I hope my review helped someone!
