Suzuka (Anime) add (All reviews)
Aug 12, 2013
Well, after finishing Suzuka all I can say is that I was utterly disappointed with it. For starters, this anime starts of well. With an almost fairy-tale like quality to it.

Our main character, Yamato, first sees the heroine of the story (Suzuka) on his way over to his new apartment and instantly develops a crush on her. When, by pure coincidence, Suzuka turns out to be his next-door neighbor and lives in the same block of apartments as him.

This is where the fairy-tale aspect comes into the show, there's a lot of charming little coincidences like this and this allows us to really look forward to how the relationship between the main characters develop.

However, this story wants to be realistic and make the relationship development seem like a struggle. So our two main characters develop strong imperfections out of nowhere. Past episode six, Yamato becomes a thick-headed idiot who can't decide things for himself and follows Suzuka around to an almost stalker-like tendency and Suzuka herself becomes a stubborn, cold-hearted character with more mood swings than any other female character in the anime medium.

This makes the show become a chore to watch and this only worsens when you realize that by episode twenty-four, they still haven't had any heart-felt moments since episode six. (Which is the episode before everything went wrong, surprise, surprise.)

As for the other characters, they're nothing important and mostly bland archetypes. Which doesn't help to pull the story along at all. There's also a second love interest for Yamato, who creates a love-triangle, but she mostly serves as padding and nothing is gained with her on-screen presence.

I've left the art and sound till last because they isn't much to say about them. The art is low-budget but not painful to look at and does get you by if can overlook a few odd bits here and there and the sound isn't too good either. The opening music is good, but the sound in the actual show is boring and repetitive as well as just feeling lackluster.

In the end, I'll wrap up this review that by saying that Suzuka starts off as a sweet, romantic anime with potential. But suddenly tries too hard to be realistic after episode six and in doing so, all the imperfections of the characters grow and become more painfully obvious until they are completely unlikable people. I imagine that Suzuka wanted to be like Pride and Prejudice, but was way out of it's league and ended up forgetting the qualities that made it good in the first place.
