5 Centimeters Per Second has been a long, overdue watch for me. However, I didn't quite expect the subtle heartbreaking romance that took place over the course of the entire story. This film certainly built upon every shot and image portraying unrequited love experienced not only as a young teenagers but as adults as well. I think for anyone who has ever felt the shallow sting of love will experience this film with a kind of depth that only true love can offer.

Story: 8/10
The story is not what you would expect. It isn't an attempt to tell a cheesy romance of two young teenagers, but is a glimpse of what life is really like. Yet, I know many would prefer the fantasy over the reality of a situation, but not this film. In a world where love can be fleeting based upon life obligations, makes true love almost impossible to hold onto. I don't know if this film is a tragic story of lost love or a message that it is better to have loved than to have never known love. However, I couldn't help but feel a strange sense of sweet bitterness with this film.

Characters: 7/10
I found the characters to be rather realistic, and even their development into adulthood reflected subtle change. Each character was unique and love struck in their own way, making them so adorable. However, my only criticism regarding characterization is the lack of action throughout the film. Yet, I believe this film is more about the message then the actual characters. Yet, to watch two young teenagers feel love for the first time definitely sings to the heart.

Art 10/10 and Sound 7/10
The art and sound truly offers no equal comparison. I haven't seen a film with such stunning visuals, and immense detail in the generic, everyday world that we live in. Simply put, every second of this film was dauntingly beautiful. Shots of awe made it impossible for me to look away, in fear that I would miss the amazing scenery. The animation itself was seamless, but most of the film doesn't require a lot of detail regarding motion. However, they did an excellent job utilizing the very elements themselves. The crashing waves of the ocean, the howling winds, and silent snow blended smoothly. The lighting is also something else they paid a lot of attention to. Most animations have only basic light and shadowing to make things look realistic. But this film doesn't just make it look real but extremely convincing. I believe anyone who has a love for art should simply watch this film for admiration sake alone.

Overall, I enjoyed this delightful story of love in a world of cold society and adult expectations. Despite putting this particular film on the back burner for three years, I am glad I watched it and would recommend that you watch it as well.
