Both are humourous stories in wich music (the piano) takes a central place.
The main characters are similar as well: a little odd person and a perfectionist.
On the other hand, Piano no Mori lacks the romantic element present in Nodame Cantabile.
Kai from Piano no Mori, and Nodame from Nodame Cantabile, both have extraordinary talent for the piano. Neither plays the piano in a way that is suitable for competition, but in a way that touches the soul.

Piano ano Mori and Nodame Cantabile are realistic stories about characters with talent in music. The premise of both series are different but the motivations of the main characters are similar. They both want to succeed in music and brings their talent into competitions against certain rivals. Both series adapts well with characterization and storytelling. There is a clever comedy with the usage of dialogues and in general tells of a human story that is very realistic. Both series also shows relationships in a dynamic fashion with its main characters. Piano no Mori does focus more on friendship while Nodame Cantabile has romance.
