Both are a Japanese "historical"-type setting and have capable likable heroines. One difference between the heroines is the fact that Yona started off weak and grew as a character while Maomao in Kusuriya no Hitorigoto was capable from the very beginning due to living in a harsher environment than Yona. Both are very enjoyable and refreshing stories.
Both are based around historical settings have a strong and smart female lead and interseting character development too.
