It's similar in the sense of the character attitudes and mannerisms, even though the plot is completely different.
Both are about a group of misfits and contain large amounts of humor. Minami and Haruhi are similar characters, and so are Mizuki and Mikuru. I can also see a similarity between Hazuki and Kyon's little sister, although neither appear much.
