Similar styles in line quality, one more light and carefee, the other more Gothic, both rather realistic in character detail, both deal with historical AUs. The stories have quite a bit of depth to them.

The first thing i remembered when i first saw Hakuouki was: Amatsuki!!!
The character design as well as the ambience feeling are very alike. Both also depict Feudal Japan (Edo Era), with some japanese folklore and mysticism mixed.
