Both series are deconstructions of something - GX is a deconstruction of the Yugioh anime, whereas NGE is a deconstruction of the mecha genre. Both series have the main character undergo a very emotional struggle - additionally, the main love interests for the main characters in both series share first names (if you're watching the sub of GX).

Both are deconstructions of their respective genres as well as a ya cast lots of supernatural shit and action in it as well too and lots of nice art and character designs too.

This recommendation may seem far-fetched, but it does seem like there is a parallel between Judai and Shinji in development. They start off as everyone does; enjoying life, but it is that very same life which backhands both characters into seeing reality. You may want to do one thing, but it isn't going to come your way if you do not erase the problem at hand first. Duelling and not wanting to go into robots is something many would love, but in their current position, who they are and their history, such life is robbed of them, and they cannot have that freedom anymore.

If you liked Evangelion you might consider it to be one of the best anime ever, let me tell you my friend you are right, but why? Simple has a spectacular protagonist Shinji Ikari all his history and background and his fantastic work in depressing him are incredible, but Jaden Yuki from YUGIOH GX is absolutely better both in background, development and characterization
However, Gx only reveals its potential to people who reach its third and fourth seasons, as its first two could be considered a very funny filler and GOD
