I suppose mecha with disheartening themes are quite popular. Anyway, as stated, Eva and 86 just happen to be that.
I suppose the only thing to go on about the two is the sense of feeling trapped, with nowhere to go or run to, but simply to face the world at hand. There are also family issues present in both, and trying to resolve those matters that have stuck around for as long as their lives (or at least most of it).

These animes are both mechas that are really amazing. What makes the characters special are that they all go through mental struggles that help to make the characters feel more real and human. Also, 86 does use cgi for the mechs but it is the best cgi i have ever seen, if anything I will forever defend the use of cgi for the mechas only because of the high quality of cgi. I do prefer animation over cgi but in this case I prefer the cgi.
