Similar themes of loneliness, isolation and escapism.
Evangelion is also quite heavily inspired by Ultra series and tokusatsu in general.
Gridman's directorial style is also quite reminiscent of Anno's in a lot of situations.
Gridman is animated by Trigger (new Gainax) and directed by a pupil from Hideaki Anno. Also both series have similar aesthetics and are slow paced
Evangelion's impact is written all over SSSS.Gridman. Yet another mecha-driven narrative which underlying message is to reject escapism. Very similar tone can be found in both. Trigger's final message about the show is simply: "Take Care of Yourself", which is the title of the last episode of Evangelion.
Besides the references to Eva, I honestly found a lot of thematic links between the two. Both are about characters running away from their problems rather than facing them, people who avoid the awkwardness of human connection as much as possible and share the message that even if it is awkward/hard/whatever else human interaction is it’s worth it.

Out of all the shows that make attempts to pay homage to Eva, SSSS.Gridman accomplishes this the best in my opinion. Both shows are able to supply the enjoyment of giant kaiju/mecha battles while actually making their characters and themes of existentialism the actual focus of their narratives. If Eva left you satisfied but understandably nihilistic Gridman is a slightly more wholesome take on a similar story.
Gridman it's a love letter to both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Tokusatsu genre itself. So it's a good plan to watch if you want some mechas fighting in order to save the world.
