Both anime are set in fictional world with WWI technology and shows adventures of military unit.
Valkyria chronicles and pumpkin scissors are two show with different stories but with basically the same layout. They're both set in a psuedo-early 1900's war time era with strong female protagonists, a unique supporting male and a odd assortment of characters in a troop.
Though they bot focus on two entirely different themes (and valkyria chronicles is a bit mor immature) you'd probably like one if you liked the other.
In both series, there's a similar background with a time setting roughly close together around the 20th century.
The female protagonist from both series are strong, independent, and always tries to keep her mind ahead of others. She is also involved with an organization dealing with both foreign and local events. With military experience, the main female protagonist is invaluable for its country's efforts.
Both series also features action, drama, comedy, and some romance (less so in Pumpkin Scissors) between certain characters.
Both shows feature features cast of soldiers, who are using their skills to do something different than killing in the troubled wartime that is the backdrop of both shows. Also both shows features the two sides of the human nature during these turbulent times, showing us the good and bad in mankind.
