They don’t appear similar at first glance, but having an overlap of the same director, co-director, and bulk of the voice cast leads to the situational and character based comedy of both shows playing out in a similar manner. Patlabor is exponentially more grounded compared to the endlessly goofy Urusei Yatsura, but many of Oshii’s hallmarks are present in both anime.
