While not entirely alike, both series features a strange female protagonist who one day meets the main protagonist in a bizarre matter; they also seem to have a strange relationship as the two characters are almost nothing alike.
Both series features the usage of 'scissors' as a tool that can be seen as both dangerous and useful. The scissors themselves also plays a part in the main characters' relationship.
Both series takes place at a school life setting and gives off a strange nostologia as the main characters deals with their every day life.
Dansai bunri and Nazo no kanojo focus on rather untouched aspects of fetishism and sexuality in general. Rather than objectifying the characters for cheap unnecessary fanservice, the ecchi scenes in these series serve the purpose of solidifying the emotional connection between the characters in a sexually intimate way.
