Sidonia no Kishi

Sidonia is what you were wishing for if you watched Muv-Luv and thought it could be so much better if it took its own material more seriously.
Although with Sidonia you do lose the epic bodysuits, almost entirely female cast and more blunt harem elements. Its certainly worth watching if you want a more mature telling of what it might be like if humanity found itself pushed to the brink.
In a futuristic world, both series primarily focuses on humanity's survival against an alien species. The main male protagonist has experience with fighting against them and are joined by his friends/comrades in a raging war. There is mild comedy, violence, and some bits of mystery related to the origins of the species. I recommend both series for anyone interested in science fiction stories with an apocalyptic setting.
Both are mecha anime, the humanity is on the brink of extinction and they are fighting atrocities made of flesh.
The atmosphere is dark in both, the difference is that Sidonia no kishi show us a fighter on the front line.

Both have humanoids fighting for survive from a faction which would consume them
Both you mechs with strong capabilities but are worthless in the hands of the untrained
Sidonia is full time CGI
Fight scenes are generally better in Sidonia
