Both Murderous Lewellyn's Candlelit Dinner and Checkmate addresses what love is; or even better, when it's something just so complex that you can't quite leave it at that. Or when it's flawed; it isn't conventional, neither did it start beautifully. Both also cover up for codependency— the characters have an idea of how love's supposed to be — something pure —, but what if it's not that? But rather, something almost twisted? They need each other so much that it's essential for them to be together, it's a matter of fact. Naturally, despite all odds, they want to be together and they will stop anyone who dares to make them part. However, the clear distinction between the two is that in Checkmate, the characters moral are all blurry, it is definitely more ambiguous than it is in Murderous Lewellyn's Candlelit Dinner. Now, the utmost reason one reminded me of the other is the writing. Oh my god, the writing— both are so poetic in such similar ways, both will ramble about the complexities between needing someone so much that you don't know what to do with yourself; that suddenly you're transformed by this feeling, and your fear turns into panic at the possibility of not being necessary to them anymore— the possibility of abandonment. Really, it's the vulnerability that comes with being at the mercy of someone. I can't stress enough just how much the writing is on point, you'll find yourself either inspired by it or reflecting on it.
