Ah, the beginning of the insanity.

Hirohiko Araki struck gold with Jojo, in my opinion. Even in these early seasons, the (obviously) bizarre nature of the show shines in the most amazing way. Is it a show about vampires steeped in a weird horror aesthetic? Absolutely, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Kung fu, drama, comedy, tragedy, and many other genres apply to this show. Usually having a mixed bag would dilute a show to become less enjoyable, but in Araki's hands, the show becomes malleable putty crafted into whatever he desires.

This film is an absolute classic in the making. Taking a page out of Studio Ghibli's book, the artwork is phenomenal, with warm, bright colors taking center stage for the majority of the film. The characters are enjoyable and have subtleties all their own. Our protagonist, the young genius, is analytical and strange, but feels about as innocent as a kid his age would be. His supporting cast, including his dentist's assistant/neighbor, and rival/ new friend all play wonderfully off of each other and make them feel organic and lively.

I must admit, at the start of this movie I was very excited. The plot held mystery and intrigue in spades and I very much wanted to see where the story led. It only took about 30 minutes for all of my hopes to slowly dissipate as... everything went wrong, slowly but surely. Amid a story with so much potential, the film kept adding twists and turns and plot in the most befuddling ways possible, turning it into a jumbled mess near the end that was comparable to watching a train wreck in slow motion.

The animation was, to be fair, certainly good enough. Nothing ...
