I rate on story, characters and enjoyment with the latter having the most weightage in my overall score. Adjustment of scores is done in comparison to other titles of the genre. I'm a generous rater, all the more reason to avoid those <5's.
Harems are rated solely on the basis of waifus and character designs unless I really liked it, in which case it's scored 7 or above. I do enjoy watching them but most have no plot, shit characters yadda yadda. I'm sure you've heard it before.
Lowest for comedies is 4. They are meant to be stupid, right?
About me:
My love for Z-grade movies has led me to value enjoyment more in general, which then makes me like shit like Gintama. Anyway, Manos is not the best Z-movie ever, it's so bad it's...bad. Space Mutiny is the most fun I've had watching one, so check it out if your inner masochist is hungering.
I loathe watching "serious" as in non-comedy or non-harem shows, as my immersion is easily broken by the smallest of things. (I decided against picking up Fuuka because of that unrealistic blue hair, for example.) I still watch and like them, just that it takes a long time for me to finish one.
Other than that, I have no preference for genre and I try to give everything a chance, so recommendations are welcome.
