I cannot recommend this story in good faith to those who are light-hearted, as it depicts dark, taboo themes. If you are particularly sensitive to reading SA, extreme kinks, or abuse, then I recommend you do not read this manga. Those who can read manga with such sensitive topics, then I definitely recommend this series! Iyagatteru Kimi ga Suki is a rare gem in my eyes, as it takes complex emotions with the common yandere trope and gives its own spin to it.
Story (6 ?/10)
Due to limited translated chapters online, I’ve only been able to read up to chapter 5. Chapters 1-5 are focused on
...
establishing the characters and dynamics rather than plot. I really like what I’ve read so far but I can’t judge the series as a whole since I’ve only had access to a small portion of it.
Art (9/10)
Despite this manga being published in 2016, the art style is reminiscent of 80’s manga art styles. It’s refreshing to see, and I also have a preference for older manga art styles. The character designs are simple but distinct, especially Makoto with his hair.
Character (8/10)
Makoto generally would be classified as a “yandere” but with a sadistic twist. Normally, yandere characters want their person of interest to love them unconditionally. He is most lustful toward Mikoto when she explicitly expresses discomfort/fear/anger aimed at him. Overall, Makoto is a peculiar character with anywhere from disgusting to violent fantasies and tendencies. In contrast, Mikoto is the typical average schoolgirl character with predictable behavior. Due to their stark mental difference, I think their pairing is really interesting to witness.
Overall (8/10)
The dynamic between the two is complicated, and as horrid as it is— I can’t stop reading it. It’s like watching a horrific car wreck happen in front of your eyes, yet you can’t seem to tear your eyes away from watching the shit go down. I’m waiting for more chapters to be released as it’s difficult to find scans on top of being translated (official translations or fan translations). Very, very invested in this story and hope to read more in the future.
