Banana Fish

Banana Fish and Elfen Lied are dark, sad anime about horrendously abused children trying to escape from the patterns and lifestyles they were brought up in. Unfortunately, as the characters fall in love and try to better themselves they also find themselves falling deeper into darkness. These stories can be very disturbing at times but remain poignant. They both come to a close with somewhat controversial endings, but I think each show does a really interesting—albeit very different—job of exploring if someone can truly be doomed from birth.

Sabikui Bisco

If you are looking for something truly original, then these anime might be for you. While the content and execution of these series are very different—one is about trying to cure a disease-ridden dystopia using mushrooms and the other is about finding love in the midst of a struggle between man-eating beasts and those who have hunted them for millennia—I cannot say that there is much media out there resembling either one. These are two incredibly creative shows that will have you saying “What is happening?!” almost every episode. Things become increasingly surreal over time and culminate in very explosive finales. Watching the final episodes of Sabikui Bisco really reminded me of the off-the-rails finish that Kemonozume had. Off the rails might actually be a good term to describe both shows; they are undeniably unconventional but can get a bit muddled. Both are very "love it or hate it." But if you enjoy one, then I think you will be able to appreciate the other’s ingenuity and willingness to take risks.

Cider no You ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru

These two anime are both sweet romances that feature shy characters who best express themselves through poetry—specifically through senryu in Senryu Girl (Senryuu Shoujo) and haiku in Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop (Cider no You ni Kotoba ga Wakiagaru). If you like one, then you’re almost sure to like the other.

Blood-C: The Last Dark

Do you like vaguely explained youth-led, tech-based organizations focused on improving the future who suddenly rush to the aid of individuals with even more mysterious, hazily explained pasts? If so, then these anime might be for you. The members of Eden of the East and SIRRUT are nearly identical in both personality and character design. I became so preoccupied with the similarities that it became difficult to focus on watching The Last Dark. It's really uncanny. However, to fully understand the backstory for The Last Dark you’ll have to get through Blood-C the tv show—which is starkly different than Higashi no Eden/Eden of the East.

Nana

While these two shows differ slightly in tone and plot, they both cover a unique period of life. Both are romantic dramas that begin with reflections on high school life but primarily focus on main characters in their early twenties. Nana follows two women as they navigate relationships of all kinds while Rumbling Hearts/Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is about a young man struggling with his romantic options and mental health. The thing I loved about both shows was how real the characters and the choices they make are. Definitely watch these if you want something so real it hurts. Because, believe me, both endings will leave you feeling hurt.

Kobato.

The actual content of these two shows differs greatly—one heavily incorporates fantasy elements and the other is much more slice of life—but I think they give off the same type of vibe. Kobato. and Looking Up at the Half-Moon are both sweet love stories with similarly understated art. Both usually fall on the humorous side of things but can easily make you cry. The main characters are very focused on the healing of those around them rather than on themselves, and the love stories featured have limited time to blossom. I love both series and find them to be heartwarming & delightful.
