Kuroshitsuji II is unfortunate - the best way to describe it. Stellar animation and sound can't make up for the poor plot line and bad characters. I won't address this as a sequel to the first season, but as it's own because I still want to make this fair.
Unfortunately, it falls very flat for me. Much like the second half of the first season, the second season features no manga material, but putting that aside, it lacks everywhere. We're introduced to a new demon/master pair, Alois Trancy, and Claude Faustus. Immediately, we see Alois has had a not so great past featuring some pedophilia,
...
which could have set him up to be a good, fleshed out character, but his cruelness and selfishness outshine what sympathy I could have had for him as a viewer.
Unlike its predecessor, the second season features much more violence and blood, not that the first didn't have any, but it's different in its usage.
A rivalry is set up between Ciel and Sebastian (the returning master/butler duo) and Alois and Claude, for a very poor reason and tries to escape the inevitable end of the series (i.e Ciel's death at the hands of Sebastian) by using a cheap fanservice tactic that could be read in a bad fanfiction.
The storyline is just sad - and not in the way it intends to be. The writing fell flat where it should have and the entire storyline feels ridiculous in the latter half and drags out too long. It's twelve episodes but each episode feels like a drag to get through. There was no comic relief in this season at all, making it a depressing, disturbing and sad anime.
When I say disturbing, I mean a scantily clad fourteen-year-old teasing and making sexual advances on his butler. The entire thing just feels like such ill taste, considering the past this character has seen.
Overrall, as Kuroshitsuji fan, I won't be going back to this season. If you like darker anime then you might like this season, but if you're looking for a sequel with the feel and atmosphere of Kuroshitsuji, I'd say give this one a pass.

I've been waiting to see Book of the Atlantic since it came out in January, and now, a few days after watching it, I finally can sit down and put together my thoughts.
It was well worth the wait!
Book of the Atlantic excels in the animation, even more so than Book of Circus. There were some noticeable uses of CGI which I found was slightly distracting, but it's a small flaw in an otherwise amazing film.
More of Ciel's past is revealed, including how he came to meet Sebastian, how they established their relationship. It was great to see the early stages of them
...
knowing each other, how Sebastian came to be so efficient at his job as Butler, etc.
Lizzie, Ciel's absolutely adorable fiance, receives a more fleshed out backstory finally, and her development is top notch, some of the best. To avoid spoilers, I won't go too into this, but Lizzie's movements were some of the best-animated scenes of the film. They were beautiful, fluid, and absolutely gracefully, everything I'd expect from a Midford.
Another side character, Undertaker, also receives a fair bit of development. I think you'll be surprised at his part in this arc, I know I was.
We were finally able to see the Midford's in action, though I was a little disappointed their roles were cut down a little bit. I was still glad to see more of them.
I was also happy to see more of Snake, though I wished he received a tad more screen time.
Book of the Atlantic works incredibly well as a film instead of a series, I think. Though there were some scenes I was disappointed weren't shown (Tanaka in Ciel's flashbacks, Ciel's conversation with Snake about his insecurities) I was still pleased with the overall storyline.
I did find myself growing a tad bored towards the end however during the fight sights, as they did feel slightly repetitive, but the story moves on fast enough.
I enjoyed Grell and Ronald's parts in the film, I thought they were a good balance to the storyline, and further adding to the theme of death.
The music is good, though it's not really memorable. The ending theme is once again done by SID, who did the opening theme of Book of Circus. I enjoyed just as much, and have had it stuck in my head for days now.
I watched the sub this time, which I normally watch the dub, but I found that I enjoyed it just as much. The VA's do a great job incorporating emotion into each line so that it packs a punch.
Book of the Atlantic once again excels as part of the series, and I'm excited to see what else it has in store!

After watching the second season, it took me a good while to come around to wanting to watch this season. But wow, am I glad I did.
Book of Circus is the shortest of the seasons so far, but by far, I'd consider it the best. It's ten episodes and I knocked it out in a day, something I don't do often. It took me about a month to finish the first season, and even longer to finish the second one, but this, my lord.
Book of Circus introduces the Noah's Ark Circus, an entertaining group of circus performers who captured my attention right away. They're
...
interesting characters, and though you know they're the villains, you can't help but love them!
Sebastian and Ciel remain the same duo, maybe even slightly more entertaining than the last season. They're sent to the Noah's Ark Circus to investigate a string of missing children. Each town the circus goes too, children go missing.
While remaining with the same personalities, Ciel does finally receive some incredibly well-done development. We see more into his character this season, his motivations, his fears, his past, etc.
As for Sebastian, he remains the same for me. He's still the same, powerful demon, his personality doesn't change much, over than that he does show some surprise this season, which was nice to see. He's never really been my favorite, but I don't hate him.
With the exception of Ciel and Sebastian, I found myself entirely entranced in the storylines of Joker, the leader of the Circus, and Doll, a member. For me, these characters quickly became some of my favorite in the manga/anime together.
As each episode goes on, the storyline only continues to get darker, but it's done in such a way that you can't help but continue. It pulls you in. I wasn't bored for a minute.
The ending was perfectly done, and I can't go too into without spoilers, but the animation and writing teams both did such an amazing job, I was blown out of the water.
The art style remains absolutely beautiful. It's vibrant, it's bright, it's clear.
The music fits so well, and I actually enjoyed the opening theme. It wasn't like the previous two seasons, and I didn't skip it like I normally would with an opening. It's different and it works.
As for the dubbing, the original cast remains great, but I found that many of the Noah's Ark Circus members fit incredibly well with the exception of Dagger. As much as I love his character, his VA wasn't my favorite.
After the let down of the second season, Book of Circus made me love the series again. It's definitely on my 'rewatch' list in the near future.
