Story:
An era of America where the Mafia is the most feared organization in the world. Inferno, the most powerful and well known. Their secret and almost invincible weapon of all is Phantom! Incidentally a Japanese tourist is a witness to one of Phantom's murders. Trying to escape the chaos he hides himself, being deprived of starvation, water, and in all of this.....he still tries to survive. The basic human instinct, Survive at all costs. Now learning that Phantom is not inhuman but a young girl called "Ein". Inferno seeing these traits that are also part of "Ein", strips him of his memories and puts
...
him through rigorous testing, both physically and mentally. Eventually earning him the name of "Zwei". Now another one of Inferno's puppets "Zwei", he fights to survive the new world of violence, deceit, and loneliness to hopefully one day regain his lost memories.
Art:
The artwork near the beginning can seem dull but enlightened at the same time. The art helps put you into the setting and mood that is being portrayed throughout the story. In the beginning, training out in the desert reminds me of a war time scenario. Training to perfection, secluded, and nothing but focus on the mind. The art really helps in getting you to envision what it would be like to be in Zwei's shoes. Smooth transitioning and keep you on your toes exciting art play a role in the action and calm moments during the story line.
Sound:
By far, one of the best choices of music and sounds. Every moment from beginning to end is reflected by the music which entices the viewer even more. The intro brings you into that suspenseful but yet relaxed mood of enjoyment. From there, each setting and scene is different and creates unique and beautiful sounds throughout the story. The loneliness is felt through the mood of the sounds or sometimes the lack of noise itself. It really helps put you into the shoes of the characters. When the action hits hard, so do the sounds and it makes you want to start running....heck, maybe train to be an assassin. The voices of the characters accent their mood. How they act and react to scenarios is shown very impressively.
Character:
Violence, deceit, loneliness, and lost memories. This almost sums everyone up in a nutshell. All of the characters are unique and I think the character progression and uniqueness set this apart from other animes. Brainwashed assassins trying to regain their memories and at the same time fighting and a battle within themselves. Inferno employees always trying to get a one up on one another by whatever means necessary. On the female side, the two that were the most enticing and could even say seductive were Ein and Claudia. Both have that loneliness inside of them but one is completely lost and fighting her way out while the other is on a mission the achieve the greatest she can with Inferno no matter what. On the male side, you have Zwei and Scythe. Two different yet some similar traits in both of them. Each one is set out on a mission. The difference being Zwei helps you feel for both Ein and Claudia. The relationships built with Zwei and the other characters makes your heart feel warm but on your toes at all times. Scythe makes you see, feel, and be horrified by what his masterpieces are. How he lives in the shadow of Inferno and lives in a dark and secret world of his own.
Overall:
