Literally, every character wants to off themselves. It's like suicide is the common cold. I've never read a story when every character you're introduced to has a personal death wish. It's predictable in that there are some tried and true troupes (teacher/student relations, childhood friends to lovers, etc) but also unpredictable (the interrelatedness of small towns folk).
If you're looking for a psychological thriller with some age-gap relationships thrown in for good measure, check it out. It's pretty dark but not insanely dark.
